Naturally, there 'was no domestic help as there is today. Everyone - men, women and children - worked hard to eke out a living in the harsh, hot and humid environment of die Gulf coast and the barren inland desert. The women were in charge of the household. They cooked, cleaned, washed and cared for the children. Those who were married to fishermen sold die daily catch in the market. The Fishermen brought their haul back to the island early in the morning and dieir wives took it to market to sell or exchange for other foodstuffs and household necessities. There were no schools for the children. Instead of being educated diey began to work as soon as they were able. When diey neared their teens the boys joined their fathers on the pearling or fishing boats and die additional income they earned went towards supporting the family.
